Welcome to Run It Back, a newsletter by me, journalist and author Victor Luckerson. Run It Back provides original, well-sourced research on neglected aspects of black history that matter in today’s world. These stories have to be elevated at a time when state legislatures are restricting what can be taught in the classroom and libraries are being forced to ban books.
My work is accessible and carefully researched, with a focus on the human stories that help us relate to the events of the past. I recently published my first book, Built From the Fire, which chronicles the history of Tulsa’s Greenwood District from the perspective of survivors and descendants of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. In the book I focused on being honest and direct without being sensational. I stuck to what I could prove. And I highlighted the voices of people who are actually from Greenwood at every juncture. I carry these principles on to my newsletter and future work writing about history.
Run It Back is a lot of work; my pieces involve original research, interviews, and analysis of primary sources. All my articles are free because I want them to be available to teachers, students and lifelong learners. But I do ask those who can to sign up for a monthly or annual subscription to help me make this work possible.
Thank you for reading, sharing, subscribing. I hope to continue writing about black history for a long time to come.
