Welcome to Run It Back, a newsletter by me, journalist and writer Victor Luckerson. I’ll be discussing my research, reporting, and writing of my upcoming narrative nonfiction book about the history of Tulsa’s historic Greenwood District, famously known as Black Wall Street. Greenwood is most famous for being burned down in a deadly race massacre in 1921, but that’s only one chapter in the neighborhood’s saga. Here, for example, is a photograph of a parade on Greenwood Avenue circa 1940, when the neighborhood had been rebuilt with more businesses than before the massacre and regularly attracted visitors from across the nation. Greenwood has suffered multiple traumas, but it’s also had many triumphs.
