Thanks for this. Amazing that these survivors are still seeking justice. Can those of us who are not residents of Oklahoma help? Is there a petition we can sign? Email we can send to the Ok legislature, Governor, etc?
Thank you for the question. In the new year Regina Goodwin, the state legislator who represents Greenwood, will introduce some bills involving restitution for massacre survivors and descendants. The bills have not been finalized yet, but I will share information on them when they are. The best way to influence their viability will be to contact the committee chairs in the legislature who get to decide whether the bills are put up to a committee vote and later whether they are put up to a general vote on the House floor.
The legal team representing the massacre survivors launched an advocacy organization called Justice for Greenwood, which provides frequent updates on their lawsuit and is also helping to document the lives and stories of massacre descendants. They are the most likely group to launch any petitions or political engagement campaigns in the future. You can follow them at https://www.justiceforgreenwood.org/
I will watch for your next post on this. Not sure an Ok legislator will be influenced by a nonresident email but i will send one in support of such efforts when the time seems right.
As you may know, Calif has a commission preparing to make recommendations re reparations. As you can imagine it is complex and contentious.
