I so appreciate both what you have done for your nephew and what you are doing to educate us all. I grew up in Oklahoma in the 70's and was appalled this wasn't taught in schools. I was deep into discovering Harvey Milk and the LGBTQ movement during my high school years while my friends were being harassed for their sensuality. I look forward to reading your book!

I've followed your Substack almost from the start. I just pre-ordered the book. There are many such "vanished" stories through the 1930s and likely beyond. I grew up in Maryland, which had segregated schools until my graduation in 1966. I look like the poster boy for the KKK. I marched in protests and joined sit-ins. I joined the Army immediately after college and we lived in integrated neighborhoods ever since.

You are likely aware of the information processing systems Verbal, Auditory, Kinesthetic. I'm an off=the=scale auditory and have few visual skills. When we lived in Virginia my dentist became more good friend than dentist. I recall visiting him one day and seeing a collection jar to support the Society of Black Engineers. He explained he was a member. As my expression evolved over the next several minutes he began to laugh. "You've just realized I'm black."

It was true. When I saw him, I saw friend and medical professional, and had insufficient visual skills to see much else. I have never understood race-based bigotry. I read Daniel Patrick Moynihan's report on the future of the Negro family, which proved prophetic. I slowly realized that the LBJ-led racial equality movement was a scam to lock in the black vote for the Democratic Party forever, without Democrats ever having to deliver.
